Recently my little man has had a terrible cold. It affects his sleep and his mood when awake. It's not nice when your baby is poorly and they can't tell you what is wrong. So I thought I would write out some tips that I have found helpful with both of my kiddies!
1. Food. Don't be upset if your baby refuses food most of the time. As long as they are hydrated and have a little something to eat here and there they'll be fine. Being ill really drains on your tummy so you won't want to be eating big meals while feeling yucky!
2. Lift up one end of their mattress. When my kids have a blocked up nose it can really make sleeping difficult. My mum told me to roll up some towels or pop a couple of small cushion under the top end of their mattress. It's much safer than giving babies a pillow to sleep on, especially if they are finding it hard to breathe through their nose.
3. Medicine. Don't be afraid to give your children medicine. I know some people don't like using medicines like calpol and neurofen for kids, but a little bit just when they're poorly won't do any damage. Obviously read the ingredients and instructions first, if you're really unsure you can always contact your GP.
4. A bowl of hot water (steaming) and a few drops of olbas oil or Vicks oil in the child's bedroom (out of reach) will help with and blocked noses while they are sleeping. A good sleep is critical for the body to help itself, so make your baby/ child are as comfortable as possible when it comes to naps or bedtime.
5. A nice warm bath before bed. Again, something as simple as a warm bath to help clear your little ones sinuses. The steam for the warm water will help to settle the effects of a nasty cold, also it will settle them down for bed and sleep a little better (hopefully).
I hope these tips help someone out. I am not a medical expert of any kind and my 'tips' are just things that have worked for my children when they are poorly. I'll see you tomorrow for Blogmas #21!
